Amager Vest, a district in Copenhagen situated southwest of the city center on Amager Island, encompasses diverse neighborhoods, including historic working-class areas, social housing, and larger family homes. Over the past two decades, rapid expansion, including the development of two new brownfield developments Ørestad and Nokken, has brought in 25,000 new residents, 25,000 university students and faculty, and 25,000 professionals to new headquarters in Ørestad.
This growth has strained existing infrastructure, particularly in mobility, despite the addition of new metro lines and regional train stations. Amager also faces challenges serving as a bridge between major road networks and new developments, such as Lynetteholm, an island being constructed from landfill. This has led to congestion and concerns for residents’ safety.
Responding to community pressure, the City of Copenhagen, in its 2024 budget, has committed to implementing “Local Traffic Plans” with public input. The GREENGAGE project aims to assist the Amager Vest Local Council in engaging citizens and collecting data to develop innovative solutions to the area’s traffic congestion.
AMAGER VEST’s OBSERVATORY
The Copenhagen Observatory addresses issues of air pollution and noise pollution, given that the Ørestad is one of the areas in Copenhagen with the highest levels of air pollution, but also transforming the area into a resilient people-centred area.
The planned activites will revolve around collecting air quality and noise data, traffic monitoring, and documenting existing living and environmental conditions in a manner where data are trustworthy and verifiable. It will use a number of different sensors, including stationary sensors and mobile sensors to record exposure to humans during transport and recreation.
PILOT OWNER INTERVIEW
This video aims to spotlight the unique local characteristics, goals and real-world impact of North Brabant Innovation Pilot within the GREENGAGE initiative.

WHO WE ARE?
The Copenhagen Observatory is led by MPA (Miljøpunkt Amager), a local environmental organization dedicated to supporting the residents of Amager in creating a greener, more sustainable island. By focusing on environmental and climate issues at the local level, Miljøpunkt Amager serves as a living laboratory for green transition, fostering community-driven solutions and sustainable practices across the district.
WHAT WILL WE DO?
AIR QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING
Monitor and visualise air quality of the neighbourhood at different times (e.g. at different times of the day, for different congestion levels etc).
ANALYSE AND VISUALISE NOISE LEVELS
Monitor and visualise noise levels of the neighbourhood at different times (e.g. at different times of the day).
TRAFFIC MONITORING
Document the frequency and type of heavy vehicle traffic at localities of interest, especially focusing on peak houres, when traffic is typically intense.
WHY?
- Driving the shift toward climate-resilient, socially inclusive, and people-first neighbourhoods.
- Create a truly citizen-led local traffic infrastructure plan for the district of Amager West in Copenhagen.
- Empowering the local eye-level perspective and building a new model for committed citizen engagement in public planning processes.
