From 20 to 24 October 2025, the Turano Valley will host a new edition of the Turano-Archaeo Survey, a unique initiative that brings together science, landscape, and community.
This citizen-focused campaign is the result of a collaboration between the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Durham University (UK), and the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape (SABAP RM-RI), with support from Poleis S.c.ar.l. and RiAttivati Youth Cultural Association, as part of the project “Villages united for the cultural and social regeneration of the Turano Valley”, funded by NextGenerationEU and the Ministry of Culture.
During this week of excavations, investigations, and archaeological walks across the municipalities of Castel di Tora, Collalto Sabino, and Paganico Sabino, citizens, volunteers, and visitors are invited to take part in Citizen Science activities, observing and documenting the landscape and archaeological sites.
The survey is carried out in collaboration with the European project GREENGAGE (Horizon Europe), coordinated in Italy by I Borghi più belli d’Italia. GREENGAGE promotes citizen involvement in collecting environmental and cultural data via its dedicated app.
Important notice: The GREENGAGE App and backend system will be offline until 28 October 2025 for a major technical update. During the campaign, participants will not be able to log in or upload data in real time.
Even while the platform is offline, field activities will continue as planned. Participants will record and document their observations, which will then be uploaded to GREENGAGE once the system is reactivated. Every contribution will help build the participatory map that tells the story of the Turano Valley.
The Turano-Archaeo Survey is a shining example of collaboration between academic institutions, local authorities, and citizens to safeguard and celebrate the archaeological and environmental heritage. Its true strength lies in collective participation and a shared commitment to observe, understand, and preserve the history and landscape that surround us.
