As part of the international conference on Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions, GREENGAGE hosted an interactive seminar titled ‘Making Urban Futures Together – Innovating Local Transition Governance through Citizen Observatories.’ The session aimed to showcase how citizen-driven approaches and digital tools can transform urban planning and governance for sustainable futures. The session was also attended by the GREENGAGE ambassadors from North-Brabant Pilot.

Seminar Highlights

The seminar was structured as a three-hour interactive session, combining presentations, live demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Key elements included: 

  • Introduction to GREENGAGE: 

Provided an in-depth overview of the project’s objectives and its innovative suite of tools for citizen observatories and participatory planning. 

  • Hands-on Data Collection and Analysis: 

Participants used the GREENGAGE mobile app to collect real-time data, followed by live demonstrations of data analysis and visualization. This showcased practical steps for planning and implementing citizen observatories. 

  • Exploring the GREENGAGE White Book: 

The session introduced the upcoming GREENGAGE White Book that provides step by step guidelines and recommendations on how to establish citizen observatories, including: 

    • Bottom-up perspective: Citizen journey and challenges in participation. 
    • Top-down perspective: Pilot owners’ steps, phases, and recommendations to avoid pitfalls. 
  • Advanced Data Collection Techniques: 

Demonstrated innovative methods such as audio inputs via conversation stations and how thematic and sentiment analysis can deepen citizen engagement in planning and policy debates. 

  • Interactive Engagement: 

Incorporated Mentimeter polls and sticky-note exercises to capture participant feedback and foster collaborative dialogue.  

  • Ambassadors’ Participation: 

The session was attended by ambassadors from the North-Brabant Pilot, who were inspired by the possibilities offered by GREENGAGE tools. They were delighted to see how a multi-disciplinary team successfully integrated socio-technical and planning dimensions to establish and deliver citizen observatories.
