What happens when local communities take the lead in protecting their environment? At this year’s Ecomondo Green Economy Fair in Rimini, the GREENGAGE project showed us just that – a powerful example of how Citizen Observatories can spark real, lasting change in Europe’s small towns and villages.

Led by Andrea Vignoli, coordinator for The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, GREENGAGE presented its citizen-driven approach to sustainability. The project is helping tackle big challenges like rural depopulation and environmental decline – not with top-down policies, but by empowering local communities to take part in collecting and analyzing environmental and mobility data.

Driving Local Action for a Greener, More Livable Future

From tracking air quality, road infrastructure, to identifying mobility patterns and environmental indicators, residents are becoming active agents of change. This hands-on data collection feeds into local sustainability plans, helping villages craft smarter, more targeted strategies to stay livable, vibrant, and connected. Thus, the project is not only gathering valuable local data but also strengthening community ownership over sustainability initiatives. This bottom-up approach has laid the groundwork for actionable, locally tailored sustainability plans – transforming data into real policy impact.

“Only with the direct involvement of citizens can we promote lasting change and build a sustainable future for Italian villages,” said Vignoli.

At Ecomondo, mayors, municipal delegates, and environmental professionals expressed keen interest in replicating the GREENGAGE model in their own regions. The strong interest shown reaffirms the value of Citizen Observatories in shaping inclusive, future-ready policies. And no wonder – it’s a rare, scalable example of how environmental data, local knowledge, and shared responsibility can combine to tackle climate challenges and make small villages more attractive for both residents and visitors.
